Accounting Director
Walsworth is a 130+ member law firm with offices in Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. We handle and litigate large scale, complex matters primarily in California.
We are currently in search of an experienced Accounting Director to join our leadership team. The Accounting Director will provide strategic financial input to the executive team and play a key role in developing and implementing financial procedures to improve and maintain the financial health of the Firm. This hands-on role will oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department and will work closely with and report directly to the CFO.
The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in a mid-size law firm, preferably insurance defense, with at least 3 years in a director-level role. The start date can be delayed to mid-January 2027. This position can be 100% remote, with occasional travel (1 – 3 times a year) to our Orange County office and more regularly, to a Tennessee location.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage all accounting operations including A/P, A/R, GL, and reporting.
- Maintain the Firm’s accounts and financial reporting on a cash basis, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded, reconciled, and reported.
- Manage month-end and year-end close process.
- Communicate with Firm leadership regularly regarding the health and KPI status of the Firm in both verbal and report form. Provide guidance on the resolution of financial matters.
- Drive efficient customer billing and AR collections cycles to ensure proper cash flow. Provide reporting to executive team.
- Manage, motivate, reward, and mentor the accounting department.
- Continuously improve operational excellence, analyze business processes, identify opportunities, and drive projects to eliminate waste and further improve people, processes, systems, and standardization.
- Ensure the accounting team maintains all internal controls and company files in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Establish and perform periodic review procedures to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and integrity of accounting and billing functions.
- Lead the Firm's annual budgeting process and provide ongoing financial forecasting, variance analysis, and recommendations to Firm leadership.
- Monitor and manage Firm cash flow, including cash forecasting and analysis of working capital requirements.
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial and management reports, identifying trends, variances, risks, and opportunities and providing actionable recommendations to the CFO and executive team.
- Assist in managing relationships with banks, vendors, and other financial service providers.
- Coordinate year-end financial activities and work with the Firm's CFO to ensure timely and accurate reporting and compliance.
- Evaluate and optimize accounting and billing systems, workflows, and technology to improve efficiency, accuracy, reporting capabilities, and internal controls.
- Develop, maintain, and regularly update written accounting procedures, workflows, and documentation; ensure appropriate cross-training and continuity of critical accounting functions.
- Oversee billing operations and compliance with client billing guidelines, including electronic billing processes, rejected invoices, appeals, and resolution of billing issues.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting, billing, or revenue management experience in a law firm.
- Minimum of 5 years of management experience overseeing accounting, billing, or revenue staff.
- Proven success in managing a team working remotely from various U.S. locations.
- Demonstrated ability to take ownership, exercise sound judgment, identify issues proactively, and drive matters through resolution.
- Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of law firm financial operations, including attorney productivity, realization, utilization, profitability, billing, collections, and other key law firm performance metrics.
- Expertise in Aderant, iTimeKeep, and BillBlast legal billing applications.
- Advanced Microsoft Office Suite and SurePoint skills.
Compensation
This is a full-time, hourly, exempt position with a pay range of $185,000 - $235,000 a year, representing Walsworth’s reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of this posting. Actual compensation may vary depending on several factors, including but not limited to, a candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
