This individual will bring deep expertise in high-voltage transformers, circuit breakers, power systems, substations, and grid infrastructure while serving as a critical link between Engineering, Sales, Project Management, Manufacturing, and our customers.
The Director will work directly with client engineers, developers, utilities, EPCs, and internal teams to develop technically sound solutions, optimize transformer and circuit breaker applications, support complex proposals, and ensure successful project execution from concept through commissioning.
This role will also help develop PDM's engineering organization, mentor technical staff, standardize engineering practices, and build the processes and capabilities needed to support continued growth across Data Center, Utility, Renewable Energy, Industrial, and other critical infrastructure markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical scoping and solution development for high-voltage transformer, circuit breaker, and power infrastructure projects.
- Work directly with customers, engineers, developers, utilities, and EPCs to understand project requirements and develop technically sound solutions.
- Review project layouts, electrical one-lines, specifications, and site requirements to determine appropriate product applications and system integration.
- Provide technical leadership involving transformer applications, circuit breakers, substations, grid interconnection, protection, and switching schemes.
- Collaborate with Sales and Business Development to support technical proposals, specifications, BOMs, RFP responses, and project-specific solutions.
- Identify opportunities to optimize and differentiate PDM products during customer design and specification development.
- Ensure proposed solutions align with PDM manufacturing capabilities, engineering requirements, and delivery schedules.
- Coordinate across Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, Project Management, and Sales to ensure custom solutions can be successfully delivered.
- Serve as a senior technical resource for engineering teams, field personnel, sales teams, and customers across multiple market verticals.
- Lead complex technical discussions and negotiations involving customers, utilities, developers, regulators, and other project stakeholders.
- Develop standardized engineering layouts, documentation, design practices, and tools that improve quoting and project execution.
- Refine and scale PDM's engineering support model as the company expands into new markets and product categories.
- Mentor and develop engineering staff into technical leaders capable of supporting PDM's different sales verticals.
- Develop technical playbooks, standards, and training programs for engineers, sales teams, and channel partners.
- Partner with leadership and HR to identify future engineering talent needs and build the organization's technical capabilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required. Multi-state licensure preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in utility-scale electrical engineering, power generation, transmission, substations, or transformer and circuit breaker design/application.
- Extensive experience with high-voltage transformers, circuit breakers, and power distribution or transmission systems.
- Deep understanding of grid interconnection, substation design, protection and switching schemes, and transformer lifecycle considerations.
- Experience leading complex, multimillion-dollar engineering projects from concept through commissioning.
- Experience managing technical discussions and negotiations involving multiple stakeholders, including utilities, developers, EPCs, and regulators.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop engineering teams and coordinate effectively across Sales, Operations, Manufacturing, and Project Management.
- Strong customer-facing skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and business audiences.
- Strong project management, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with EPCs and supporting RFPs, proposals, and technical bids for power infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of NERC/FERC requirements and utility interconnection standards.
- Knowledge of IEEE/ANSI circuit breaker standards, including the C37 series.
- Experience with substation protection and control schemes.
